ALBLASSERDAM – Marquip, a Dutch specialist in exhaust systems and silencers for the industrial, energy and marine markets has upgraded the main engine exhausts of the Maltese Falcon, the 88m (289ft) superyacht with its iconic unstayed three-masted Dinarig.

The Perini Navi-built yacht, launched in 1990, suffered from cooling water problems, says MarQuip.

This caused delamination of the GRP silencers/separators so the time had come to upgrade and renew the main engine exhaust system.

“The limited space available onboard had made Maltese Falcon a little noisy when sailing on her engines and we were keen to address this issue and enhance the exhaust system in any way we could,” says MarQuip General Manager Jeroen van der Matten.

The work involved making a new system that would be quieter and better performing. After initially specialising in ‘dry’ exhaust systems, says Van der Matten, “we responded to repeated requests from the market to also become an expert in ‘wet’ systems.”

Staying within the same footprint of the original design, MarQuip engineers managed to modify the internals of the silencer in such a way that the met the requirements of the owners.

“Our system was successfully commissioned as sea trials showcased an even better performance than predicted.,” says Van der Matten. “Both the yard and the clients were delighted with the unexpectedly high degree of sound attenuation reached with a new exhaust system, one which is sure to pass the test of time for at least another 20 years.”
