MAKKUM—Hutting Yachts is launching a 13.9m Hutting 46, an aluminum ocean-going sailing yacht available with two bulb keel types: a short one and a deep one. The yard says the two achieve nearly identical performance.

Updating the existing Hutting design has also resulted in a narrower transom, a retractable bowsprit and an extended cabin roof.

The 46-footer marks Hutting Yachts’ re-entry into the ‘blue water’ aluminum sailing yacht market. The yard calls it “a significant step in the yard’s 49-year history, “along with the upcoming company takeover” by the two sons of the founder, Tjerk Hutting, in October 2024.”

The latest Hutting retains the classic aesthetic while optimizing speed, sailing performance, safety and comfort. To achieve this, the yard collaborated with Van Oossanen Naval Architects, the studio that designed Australia II, the 1983 America’s Cup winner.

The transom has been kept narrower than most modern long-range yachts for optimal sailing behavior in waves, providing a high level of comfort and safety. The yard says this while maintaining the ‘Hutting’ stern.

The transom is positioned higher above the water, so the entire length of the hull is optimally utilized to improve sailing performance. This allows the stern wave to exit the hull at an ideal angle, providing extra sailing comfort and, above all, safety at sea.

The bow is kept deeper with a relatively sharp V-shape compared to other modern racing sailing yacht designs. This ensures safety and comfort in rough seas.

The Hutting-46 has two keel configurations: a 1.9m (6.3ft)  draft, ideal for offshore sailing, and a 2.4m (7.9ft) for ocean sailing.

Using a Velocity Prediction Program (VPP), the sail plan has been optimized for crucial factors such as stability, drag and shear force. The extendable bowsprit offers flexibility, allowing the use of a Code Zero or Helix for optimal trim options in different weather conditions.

The aluminum hull construction has been carefully designed, with the keel fully integrated into the hull structure. This design improves stability and comfort under sail. The interior and deck layout are fully customizable.

Building a 46-foot Hutting takes about 14 months. The average investment in the yacht is €1.4 million, excluding VAT.

Hutting Yachts was founded by Tjerk Hutting in 1975. The yard developed a series of aluminum Hutting sailing yachts from 40 to 50ft, and the 54ft Polar Expedition yacht, the Hutting Polaris.
